Mental Health
Created in 2015, this body of work aimed to highlight mental illness as a fashion statement, as opposed to a psychological disorder. The subject herself suffers with depression and anxiety, two disorders which are becoming increasingly common among young people. Around the time of creating this series, sensitive topics such as depression and anxiety were heavily projected, particularly throughout social media. I received the impression that suffering with the above disorders was now considered a trend. Informed by the work of Rankin, Jim Goldberg and Diane Arbus, the black and white portraits use accessories and make up so simulate emotion, self harm and suicide.
